I have found this machine to be both compact and well made. Mostly metal, there are a few plastic bits, but I don't think these would cause future problems. It's FASTsuper fast. It zips through heavy weight fabrics with ease. I am pleased with the simple, but useful array of stitches (my other machines offer more stitches, but I rarely use them). This machine is stable and does not bounce (I have returned other machines that bounce when used).

I think the light could be vastly improved -it is way too dim. I prefer the LCD light on my other machines.

All and all, I would buy this machine again and recommend to other crafters.

UPDATE: I have now been using this machine for several weeks. I'm very impressed-the speed is fabulous-note, this may be too fast for people new to sewing. Good thing Singer added a finger guard (which gets in the way a bit, but I'm sure I would have otherwise sewn through my fingers by now). Most recently, I have enjoyed how effortlessly it zipps through thick fabrics amazing!

I have been a tailor for twenty years. My last Singer lasted more than 35 years (it belonged to my grandmother before me). When I finally let that one go, I purchased this one. I don't use it an unusual amount since I also have an industrial and do a great deal of work by hand. It last 1 1/2 years before it needed $135 worth of repairs. And that didn't even cover everything it needed. The warranty is a JOKE. I called just to ask a maintenance question. I was put on hold for 45 MINUTES and when a rep did come on, she immediately began dissecting everything I said to give me a million reasons why the warranty was invalid, (including the fact that I had opened the case to CHANGE THE LIGHTBULB per the instructions!!! and the fact that I was a professional tailor). I WASN'T EVEN TRYING TO MAKE A CLAIM ON THE WARRANTY!!!! I recently discovered that Singer only licenses the name now, and doesn't make the reliable old work horses I was accustomed to. If you sew more than once a month save yourself a world of frustration and get the JUKI. Same price but incredibly reliable and sturdy. I will never buy anything else again.

This is my second machine and I bought it because it seemed heavier duty than most in the price range. While the criticism about plastic parts is fair, the body is solid metal and heavy and the motor is extremely powerful. It's very easy to use, and the self adjusting tension is great, as I hate messing around with tension. the light could be brighter but overall I'm really happy with it. So far, all of the generic low shank feet I've bought have worked with it.

I'm thrilled with the performance of the CG590 so far. I purchased it as a replacement for my original Singer/Merritt 1827 which I purchased over 20 years ago that also worked like a champ until it mysteriously disappeared. Again, to agree with others, there are plastic parts that I just don't care for, like the presser foot arm lift. It works just like it should! Don't get me wrong, but that particular part just "feels" less than sturdy. The CG590 HAULS. Make no mistake, if you're not careful and very cautious with the foot pedal, without the needle guard, you really could do some damage, but if you're in control and have a lot of yardage to get through, this is the machine to do it. Just make sure your work surface is also heavy duty. The motor in this baby is so strong that it'll shake your table and even with the little suction cups at the base (yeah, ha!), the machine body WILL MOVE if your table isn't absolutely solid. Great machine by Singer! I had been depressed by all of the word that Singer had gone completely plastic and wasn't worth diddly anymore. Not so! You can also purchase (or use your old ones!) solid metal feet if you're like me and totally hate the plastic ones. It's just a personal thing and I don't feel secure using a snap-on anything when I'm sewing. I'm a little rough I guess. No upholstery fabrics or sailcloth for me yet, but I did manage four and eight layers of broadcloth while hand guiding velcro onto it with no problems.

The best I feel like I'm going back in time when I was 12 and my grand mom taught me how to sew, this machine look like something she had and it was a beauty.

I'm taking up heavy jeans and the performance is very good.

This is a tough machine for heavy material.
