I actually am buying this set for the second child in a different color because I am continually pleased as it grows with my daughter. I bought the espresso set the first time. The Espresso is a pretty true espresso and not totally black. It is a great, rich-looking color but it will show dust all the timeespecially when you are running a humidifier and everything settles. Easy enough to dust off with a little sock while I am hanging out putting my daughter down but is a little annoying sometimes. It is more of a finish than a wood grain that shows through so the edge wore a little as a result of me reaching in to pick her up. After that I just bought a cloth rail cover and that seemed to fit and protect it well enough.
I also have the night stand and double dresser. My biggest issue when shopping around was to find good quality drawers that glide nicely and are not made of some crappy particle board that sound horrible when they close. These slide beautifully and do not sound cheap as they roll and they never stick.
The front of the crib comes off to make the daybed and we just bought the full size bed rails for when my daughter gets older. Perhaps you will see a review of these events. The crib itself was super easy to put together. I did it with a little help when I was 2 weeks from my due date.
I HIGHLY recommend this setespecially considering that it is no longer sold at any retailers in my state I am going to take a shot with the second set and buy it online. I am hoping I get a color that works well but I am confident the quality will not be compromised. The crib itself seems to be decent quality, however the color is NOTHING like it looks online OR in the samples I've seen of Chestnut in person. I seen this brand's chestnut color sample when I was shopping to make certain it would work. In person it looks like a nutral color wood, but when the crib came it was almost a cherry color, which is not close to what I was wanting. I would have liked to have sent it back; however, it was going to cost me an additional $150 to ship it back for return, so I couldn't see spending the additional money. Be careful if you are wanting a certain color of wood.
