When I got these, the first thing I noticed was how rough (meaning not straight) the edges were. You can actually kind of see this from the picture on the product page, but I hadn't noticed. You definitely notice that when they're sitting on a table with straight edges. I was able to live with that, though, even if it did make them look sort of cheaply made. I'll also give them credit for ensuring that the wood tiles stick well to the felt backing. I haven't had a single piece fall off.
The real problems come when you want to use them as functional placemats. Problem number one is that any little crumbs or bits of food that fall into the cracks between the wood tiles can be challenging to get out, so before long you've either invested a substantial amount of time manually cleaning each placemat after every use or they're just getting kind of gross. The second problem is if you have a spill of liquid onto a placemat. My niece spilled some pulpy orange juice on one the other night and not only is it nearly impossible to get the pulp off of the semi-rough wood tiles (not to mention underneath them), but if the felt gets wet, it shrinks very substantially when it dries. I tried to clean that one as carefully as possible with minimum use of water and just laid it out to dry, but the felt is shrinking and making the wood tiles bunch together and begin to overlap each other. I think that placemat is a goner at this point.
I give these four stars for decorative placemats and two stars as functional placemats, which I'm averaging out to a three overall.

I purchased a set of these placemats from Macys.com and received a mixmatch set. I searched online and one showed that matched my set from amazon. The item was used and affordable so I bought it. It amazed me that on the product site it was around $25 and on amazon.com through this seller it was less then $5 for one. I received the placemat on the estimated delivery date and was surprised that it said used but still had the tags on it. I was also happy to see that it was exactly as it looked in the picture!!!!!! These mats are awesome. I first saw them at a friend's house and then went on a search to find them....good old Amazon found them for me. Although quite expensive, as they are handmade, I splurged and bought 4. They are perfect for my little house in the woods but I think they'd make a statement in any house. The only negative statement I would have, is that they aren't varnished, but that can easily be done. If left unvarnished I think food would stain the wood. As soon as I opened the package I was happy to see a real looking wood product. The mat is made up of qingke wood slices glued onto a brown felt backing. I've never heard of qingke wood before, but it's light and attractive. The mat measured 18 inches long by 13 inches deep. Overall, it's very organic and natural looking and fits in well with my alder kitchen cabinetry. I put two of these Design Ideas Branch Mats on our breakfast island and it's both unusual and striking.
