I use it to sit in a comfy chair in front of tv, to do whatever little "projects" I have for myself like pulling recipes out of cooking magazines, or putting my lap top on it, or maybe even a food plate....The pockets are great for dropping in whatever pen etc so you don't lose it, or books even (they're the length of the sides, so nice sized), but it is plastic afterall. The tray portion doesn't have the sturdiness of a more fabricated plastic, it will tend to bow. It's more like a flimsier tupperware lid than the bowl, and other factors can make it more malleable, such as the warmth of a laptop or if the sides of your chair are a little further away, it might bow so the pockets dip into the chair corners.
End result, it's great for what I use it for, but if I were going more for a sturdy laptop tray, I might look for something with a more rigid top. Also, my laptop comes close to fitting just perfectly in the geometric area of the tray, which means my power cord sort of pops that size up and out of the recessed tray, placing the weight of the laptop right on that plug in spot. I've had technology that gets lose if too much weight is jiggled around where something is plugged in, so I'm constnatly trying to make sure I have something propping that end of the laptop up so it's weight is not resting on the plug that sticks out over the tray rim.

I was pleased to discover the tray was made in Israel. I expected it to be another cheap made in China piece. Sturdy plastic, but some flexibility. Love the purple shade. Good value for the price.Honest reviews on Purple Lap Tray
My wife bought this for my daughter to use when she is eating or doing activities while sitting on the couch. Unfortunately, it is not very stable and can tip/tilt pretty easily, especially if a smaller child is using it. The base is just not well designed. They were clearly worried about optimizing how many they could fit in a shipping container when they designed these trays. Obviously they did a good job of that since you see them everywhere now. It's probably fine for an adult to use a lap top on, as long as you are keeping it steady, but I wouldn't recommend it for a child. Get something with sturdier construction and a wider base.
